Factories underpay their workers and spend less money on keeping their working conditions safe and humane so that their products can stay at a purchaseable price while still making a profit. They typically make between 25 and 35% profit margin, less for more expensive products. (Morgan, 2021) Could they reasonably accept less profit, and put that money towards paying their workers, getting better machinery, and keeping their buildings up to code? Well, for a small business, a good profit margin is just about 10% (Parker, 2022). The cost of running a small business is higher, so their products are usually more expensive, but not nearly as many of these products are sold in comparison to a large business. So, a large business will end up recieving more money than a small business even if their profit margin was lower. I believe that, because of this, it is possible for working conditions in places that produce a huge amount of products to improve while still allowing easy access to their products.
